starting small

I have slowly been getting to know more about my Sicilian ancestry and thought it would be good to create a space where I can document what I have learned along with new findings in this pursuit!

The image above was taken in the Spring of 2019 on my first visit to the village of Salice in the province of Messina where my grandfather was born. 20 years earlier, in the Spring of 1999, I travelled to Sicily for the first time, knowing only that he was from 'Messina'.

In the Fall of 2024, I returned to Sicily and got to see more of Salice but already I am looking forward to my next trip- hopefully in the Fall of 2026. Between now and then I'm planning to capture my small steps towards learning more about the island and reflecting on what I've come to know and experience so far.
